Coventry Airport chief executive, Chris Orphanou has pointed out that additional commercial flights would absorb the falloff produced by the departure of their biggest passenger carrier and promised that passenger flights would come back to Coventry.
The airport was opened 1936. Armstrong Whitworth, aircraft manufacturers was based nearby at Whitley Aerodrome and they grew an aircraft factory on the airport site soon afterwards.
During World War II the site was called RAF Baginton, and RAF Fighter Squadrons were based there. The base’s runway was gravely damaged during the Luftwaffe bombing of Coventry.
After the war the RAF transferred the base to civil authority use and Coventry Airport was extensively employed as a commercial freight hub.
Pope John the Second travelled to Coventry airport in 1982 by blue and gold helicopter before leaving in the popemobile.
